"Make Make is transforming a 100-year-old cork factory into one of the most important contemporary art centers in Latvia."
The journey began with a small-scale temporary project, which evolved into a profound engagement and a complete reimagination of the space. This transformation, in turn, infused a fresh significance into the neighborhood surrounding the center.
Make Make’s approach to utilizing the public outdoor space around Zuzeum was rooted in thorough research examining the neighborhood’s current state, its existing attractions, and perceptions, alongside studies focusing on public accessibility to contemporary art. The project involved collaboration with landscaping experts, graphic designers, as well as art and museum specialists, all working alongside the core team.
The outdoor space at Zuzeum was transformed into a gathering place for individuals from diverse backgrounds, mirroring the social diversity of the neighborhood. The central courtyard serves as an art installation, a stage, a café, and a bar all rolled into one. Adorned with vibrant orange hues, it’s designed to foster connections, encourage communication, promote exploration, and ignite mutual inspiration. Conceived as a democratic concept, it aims to make art more reachable to varied audiences. Simultaneously, it represents a lasting commitment to revitalizing a previously overlooked section of the city, offering essential high-quality public space.
