Setting up a new standard in sustainability for the city — that was the main ambition for the reconstruction of the historical Teze marketplace in Baku. Rather than installing complex and expensive mechanical or electronic systems, Make Make project makes the most use of historical heritage, alternative energy, natural ventilation and passive cooling, as well as the upcycling of existing materials to maximize their life cycle
The quintessence of this approach is Teze Bazar’s Third Space, created by Make Make as an intersection between traditionally private and public urban spaces. Usable for exhibitions, performances, film screenings, board games, wine and food-tasting and concerts or just reading, resting and relaxing, it not only extends the usual working hours of the market but also broadens and diversifies its public.
The building features a highly performant, low impact, parametrically designed roof that harmonizes visually with the architectural character of such historical bazaars and adapts to various weather conditions. The facades are built from locally sourced and quarried stone blocks which makes them highly environmentally responsive, keeping the space cool during the day and cozy in the evenings through the release of absorbed heat.
